Meru Temple

Meru Temple is the biggest and is one of the oldest Balinese Hindu temples in Lombok Island. Built during the Dutch colonization by prince Bali Anak Agung Made Karang in 1744 this temple was a citadel to battle Dutch during their second military aggression. Meru Temple complex covers three temples which are Brahma Temple, Syiwa Temple and Wishnu Temple. This is also a representation of the universe being each temple represent one mountiain: Brahma Temple represents Mt Agung (in Bali), Syiwa Temple represents Mt Rinjani and Wishnu Temple represents Mt Semeru. There are also 33 small buildings within the complex designed for various activities. This temple is also a unifying symbol for Hindu devotees in Lombok.
